12 Signs of Spiritual Maturity and Growth

It’s essential on our spiritual path to pause and reflect on our growth. This practice helps to fuel our continued evolution, offering clarity and gratitude for how far we’ve come. Here are 12 signs of spiritual maturity and growth:

1. We Stop Caring About What Others Think

Liberation comes when we realise other people’s opinions don’t define us. This realisation allows us to make choices aligned with our own truth - don’t you wish you’d learnt this earlier in your life ? I do.

2. Inner Life Takes Priority Over Material Things

The more we cultivate a richer inner world, the less we find ourselves attached to accolades or material possessions. Authentic happiness comes from within, not from external stuff or validation.

3. We Value Our Privacy

As we grow spiritually, there’s less need to prove ourselves to anyone. This may look like spending less time on social media or retreating into quietude to nourish our soul.

4. Deeper, More Authentic Relationships

Small talk, gossip and fear of missing out no longer interest us. We seek richer, more meaningful connections, though this can mean letting go of some relationships that no longer align.

5. We Observe, Rather Than Identify With, Our Thoughts

Spiritual growth fosters awareness, instead of being enmeshed in our reactions or habits, we become witnesses to them, creating space for intentional change.

6. We Live More in The Present Moment

The past and the future lose their grip on us. We stop dwelling on worrying excessively and realise the present is where life’s true power resides.

7. A Softening Happens

On every level - mind, body, and soul - there’s a gentle softening. Spiritual growth isn’t about rigidity; it’s about surrender, compassion and openness.

8. We Become Aware Of Our Nervous System

We learn to notice when we are dysregulated and have tools  and practices to return ourselves to balance eg deep breathing, meditation, chanting.

9. We Redirect Negative Thinking

Growth allows us to recognise when our mind gets hooked on negativity or unhelpful thinking patterns. We consciously choose a more positive, constructive path.

10. Faith In Something Greater Than Ourselves

Spiritual maturity often brings a deep connection to something larger - whether we call it God, Higher Self, The Universe, or life itself. We see life as something that flows through us rather than happening to us.

11. We Are More Comfortable With Uncertainty and Let Go Of Resistance To What Is

The need to control or predict everything fades. We learn to trust the unfolding of life, embracing uncertainty and change as part of the journey.

12. Gratitude Increases

A mature spirit finds gratitude everywhere - in small joys, challenges, and even the mundane. This shift brings a profound sense of contentment and peace also known as santosha.

I invite you to take a moment to recognise and celebrate these signs on your own journey, no matter where you are. I hope this gives you some fuel to keep cultivating  your practices ( remember a little bit a lot)  and walking the path toward your own conscious evolution.
